We're nearing the end of the Group stages of the 2014 Brazilian World Cup and thus far it's been quite the tournament, full of drama, spectacle and just a wee bit of attempted cannibalism.

England have already exited the stage and are on their way back to Blighty, but they're aren't the only footballing superpower to fall at the first hurdle - Italy, Portugal (kinda) and Spain have also come undone and will be exiting the tournament early.

There's been plenty of drama as well, with the biggest talking point being Suarez's strange decision to take a bite out of Italian defender Chiellini. The story took an even stranger turn a few days ago when Uruguayan TV attacked the British press, claiming they're at the centre of a conspiracy seeking to discredit the striker. Sounds plausible to us!

Rejoice all ye lovers of the beautiful game, the Brazilian World Cup is now officially underway! The hosts went toe-to-toe with Croatia last night and despite a disastrous snafu early on, managed to emerge victorious, beating the Croatians 3-1.

England fans will already be looking ahead to Saturday night, when the Lions take to the pitch against Italy for their opening game. Hodgson has counselled caution ahead of the match, warning that his inexperienced new players might need a few matches under their belts before they get their heads in the game. Still, there will be plenty of big names to help them along, including Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard.

On the Italian side we’ll see big-hitters like the explosive Mario Balotelli and Andrea Pirlo, who are sure to keep the England defence on their toes. Can the new-look England topple the Italians? Let us know in the comments section below.
